FAQ for International Orientation

Q: When will I receive my I-20? [show/hide]

A: Once you submit all of the required financial and passport documents to the Admissions Office, the International Education Office will process your I-20 within two to three weeks. All I-20s are sent via Express Mail to ensure they arrive as soon as possible.

Q: Do I have to attend the International Orientation in September? [show/hide]

A: Yes. The International Orientation in September is mandatory to all newly admitted frosh international students.

Q: I have registered for an International Orientation, how do I pay the fee? And, when is payment due? [show/hide]

A: Always include your first and last name, and your UCSC 7-digit ID number. Payment is due by the first day of your orientation. You have a few payment options available.

1- Paying with check or money order. Include your UCSC 7-digit student ID number on a check or money order, then send payment to:

All payments must be made in US Dollars. Do not send cash. UCSC accepts payments by money orders or check drawn on a US bank.

2- The UCSC Cashier's Office will also send you a billing statement with amount owed and payment instructions.

3- Pay on the first day of your orientation, pay with a check or money order (in US dollars)


Q: Where will I live during this time? And after September 26? [show/hide]

A: You will move into your own dorm room (or apartment) which you will occupy for the entire academic year when you check in on September 15th. If you are living off campus during the academic school year, arrangements to live on campus during the program will be made for you by the Orientation Office.

Q: When is the earliest I can arrive? [show/hide]

A: You are expected to check-in on Monday, September 15th between 10:00am-3:00pm Pacific Standard Time.

Q: How will I get from the airport to Santa Cruz? [show/hide]

A: For a small fee, airport pick-up is provided to make your traveling experience easier. You must register for airport pick up by Saturday, August 30th. The Orientation Office will communicate with you regarding this detail. Please check your email regularly.

Q: Will the AWPE be included as part of the International Orientation? When do I pay for the AWPE? [show/hide]

A: You will take the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE) during the orientation time. You will receive more information on your first day of orientation. Students are expected to PAY IN ADVANCE at https://www.awpe.org/candidate/. Be sure to print your receipt for your payment and bring it with you to the exam.

Q: How do I prepare for class enrollment? [show/hide]

A: Use the Frosh Advising Guide along with other communications you have received from your advisers to prepare for enrollment in classes.

Q: When can I enroll for classes? [show/hide]

A: You can find the specific time that you may begin enrolling (your "enrollment appointment") in your MyUCSC Student Portal. You can enroll once your appointment time begins. Please note that if you are enrolling from a different time zone, you will need to convert your enrollment appointment time to your local time.

Q: How do I find my adviser? [show/hide]

A: You have a college adviser and a department (major) adviser. Your college adviser will begin to communicate via email starting in May. Please read through all the information sent by your college adviser.

Q: How do I register for the International Orientation? [show/hide]

A: You can access the International Orientation registration page via your MyUCSC portal.

Q: When should I arrive to the United States? [show/hide]

A: You need to check-in on Monday, September 15th between 10:00am-3:00pm Pacific Standard Time.

Q: What are the immunization requirements at UCSC? [show/hide]

A: Visit the New and Returning Student Health Information page to learn about specific immunization requirements.

Q: What are the insurance requirements at UCSC? [show/hide]

A: The University of California mandates that all students be covered by a health insurance plan. All undergraduate students are automatically enrolled in the University of California sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP) unless you choose to submit an insurance waiver showing proof of comparable coverage.

Q: Which airport should I fly into? [show/hide]

A: UC Santa Cruz is located near multiple International airports. Most students choose to fly to the San Jose International Airport due to its close proximity to the University campus.
